Goods and Services
Deficit Decreases in July 2002
The Nation's international deficit in
goods and services decreased to $34.6 billion in July, from
$36.8 billion (revised) in June, as exports increased and
imports decreased.
Goods and Services

Exports increased to $83.2 billion in July from $82.2
billion in June. Goods were $59.1 billion in July, up
from $58.2 billion in June, and services were $24.1
billion in July, up from $23.9 billion in June.

Imports decreased to $117.8 billion in July from
$118.9 billion in June. Goods were $98.0 billion in
July, down from $98.9 billion in June, and services
were $19.8 billion in July, down from $20.0 billion in
June.

For goods, the deficit was $38.8 billion in July, down
from $40.6 billion in June. For services, the surplus
was $4.3 billion in July, up from $3.9 billion in
June.
Goods by Category

The June to July change in exports of goods reflected
increases in automotive vehicles, parts, and
engines ($0.4 billion); other goods ($0.2
billion); consumer goods ($0.1 billion); and
capital goods ($0.1 billion). A decrease occurred
in industrial supplies and materials ($0.1
billion). Foods, feeds, and beverages were
virtually unchanged.

The June to July change in imports of goods reflected
decreases in consumer goods ($0.6 billion);
other goods ($0.3 billion); and capital goods
($0.3 billion). Increases occurred in industrial
supplies and materials ($0.1 billion) and
foods, feeds, and beverages ($0.1 billion).
Automotive vehicles, parts, and engines were
virtually unchanged.

The goods deficit with
China increased from $8.5 billion in June to
$9.3 in July. Exports decreased $0.3 billion
(primarily civilian aircraft) to $1.9 billion, while
imports increased $0.5 billion (primarily toys, games,
and sporting goods; and apparel) to $11.2 billion.

The goods deficit with
Western Europe increased from $7.1 billion in
June to $11.0 billion in July. Exports decreased $1.3
billion (primarily civilian aircraft, pharmaceutical
preparations, and automotive parts) to $11.7 billion,
while imports increased $2.5 billion (primarily
passenger cars and pharmaceutical preparations) to
$22.7 billion.

The goods deficit with
Japan increased from $5.3 billion in June to
$5.7 billion in July. Exports decreased $0.2 billion
(primarily measuring, testing, and control
instruments; and civilian aircraft engines) to $4.5
billion, while imports increased $0.2 billion
(primarily passenger cars and TV's and VCR's) to $10.2
billion.
